My Visit To Kedarnath Dham
Location and Geography
Altitude:
Kedarnath is situated at an altitude of about 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) above
sea level.
Location:
It lies in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, near the Chorabari Glacier,
which is the source of the Mandakini River.
Surroundings:
The temple is nestled amidst the snow-capped peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas,
with the Kedarnath range providing a majestic backdrop.
Religious Significance
Kedarnath
Temple: The Kedarnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one
of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest Hindu shrines of Shiva. The temple is
believed to have been built by the Pandavas, and later revived by Adi
Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
Pilgrimage:
Kedarnath is one of the four main sites in the Chota Char Dham Yatra, which
also includes Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. It is considered one of the
most important Shiva temples in India.

October, except during the monsoon months of July and August when landslides
are common.
2013 Floods
Kedarnath was severely affected by the devastating floods in June 2013, caused
by a cloudburst and the melting of the Chorabari Glacier. The floods caused
significant damage to the temple town, but the temple itself withstood the
disaster. Extensive reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts have since been
undertaken.
Cultural and Mythological Importance
Kedarnath holds a significant place in Hindu mythology. It is believed that
after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva to absolve their
sins, but Shiva evaded them by taking the form of a bull.
